The Harris is delighted to announce the opening of The World of Martin Brown: Horrible Histories and Other Dazzling Drawings, a spectacular exhibition celebrating the artistry of best-selling children’s book illustrator Martin Brown.

Running from Saturday, 23 May to Monday 31 August in Gallery One, this free exhibition invites visitors of all ages to discover the wit, imagination and visual storytelling that have made Brown’s work a staple in homes and classrooms across the nation.

Featuring over 100 original pieces, the exhibition charts Martin Brown’s creative journey from his earliest cartoons through to international publishing triumphs. Audiences will encounter iconic artwork from Horrible Histories, whimsical illustrations from Lesser Spotted Animals and imaginative new material from Martin’s own book, Nell and the Cave Bear.

For the first time, visitors can explore previously unseen original works from Brown’s newest Horrible Histories release on Football, from rough sketches to finished masterpieces.

The exhibition is organised into three engaging sections: Early Years: A Cartoonist’s Journey; Horrible Histories: Time Travelling With Ink; and Dragons, Animals and Cave Bears: Imaginary Expeditions.

In a unique twist, The Harris will pair select items from its own collection of gruesome historical artefacts with Martin’s drawings, offering a fresh perspective on history and creativity.

Adding to the excitement, Martin Brown has been invited to produce bespoke new work for the show, with a special storyboard featuring Horace the Elk in development. This promises to be a highlight for fans eager to glimpse the illustrator’s creative process up close.

Martin Brown, said: “I’m delighted the exhibition is coming to Preston – especially as The Harris is including a few pieces of its fabulous collection in the show. Being asked to add my own cartoony take to some of them was a real honour, and huge fun. And apart from the fun bit, drawing is great at making topics approachable and bridging divides in understanding. The Horrible Histories taught me that. It’s also something I truly believe everyone can do.”

Adrian Phillips, Chief Executive of Preston City Council said: “The stories brought to life through Martin Brown’s illustrations are amongst the most well-loved of our time. Horrible Histories, in particular, has captivated generations with its unique blend of humour and history, making learning both accessible and compelling. We are delighted to host this exhibition, which we are confident will inspire both enjoyment and intellectual curiosity among visitors of all ages.”

The exhibition is free to attend and promises an inspiring day out for families, schools, and art lovers alike.

It is presented in partnership with Seven Stories, The National Centre for Children’s Books, and developed by the South West Heritage Trust in collaboration with Martin Brown and Events of Wonder.
