To celebrate history and culture, The Harris is participating in Heritage Open Days with two exciting events. Taking place across England throughout September, these free events offer a fantastic opportunity to discover new experiences, explore hidden gems, and connect with your local community.

The Harris is offering two days of self-led tours of the Egyptian Balcony on Saturday, 12 September and Sunday, 13 September from 1pm – 3pm. The unique space usually is closed to the public and only available via bookable tours, however, for this year’s Heritage Open Days, it is open for free with no ticket needed.

The balcony is situated on the top floor and offers breathtaking views, glimpses into early 20th-century fascination with Ancient Egypt, and is home to a series of murals by artist John Somerscales. The awe-inspiring murals were commissioned in 1908 by Preston Corporation with Somerscales travelling to Egypt to capture authentic scenes. His large-scale paintings depict many iconic sites such as the Great Temple of Amun-Ra at Karnak and the Pyramids at Giza. 

This self-led tour is a perfect opportunity to step into the world of Ancient Egypt and to explore a rare and unique area of The Harris. Please note, the Egyptian Balcony is up steep, narrow stairs without lift access and is suited towards adults.

Additionally, The Harris is hosting Suffrage Signs of Resistance, a placard making workshop on Saturday, 12 September at 12pm – 4pm led by The Friends of Edith Rigby. This artistic and historical workshop is open to all with no ticket needed. You will be able to craft your own protest placard used by two major interlinking historical movements; the suffragettes fighting for the vote and the early industrial workforce striking for fair labour conditions. Not only is this a great way to do something creative but you will also be able to discover the power and history behind visual protest. This workshop is taking place at The Studio and is suited to all ages.
