Background of the project

Why is music so important to the Dominica and Friends group?

“Music brings us together and makes us feel close and connected. What it does for our well-being is more precious than gold. We especially need music and each other right now.

We grew up listening to the music our parents played. It was upbeat, colourful and diverse. Genres like REGGAE, SALSA, CALYPSO, SOCA reflected the unique character of the different Caribbean islands. Especially important is the festival music of Carnival and also Gospel music reflecting our culture and traditions.

When we get together the music connects us.

Dominica and Friends Group was formed for the benefit of the community. Letting the people of Preston know that the Dominican community is caring and welcoming. Connecting the elders, being there as a support to the older generation and for anyone feeling alone. We want to help people connect with each other.”

The history of the vinyl records

The Discover Preston Gallery of the Harris Museum houses a unique collection of items which celebrates Prestons diverse community history.

Included within the Caribbean Carnival display, are two 7″ recordings of the Preston guild steel band. Both were recorded and released locally in Carnforth by recording company Deroy records, who specialised in limited pressings.

The tracks are as follows:

2. Guild calypso Tulketh folk and the Revival Steel Band.

3. Rum & Coca-Cola

4. The pollution song

One of these tracks features vocals by Preston Windrush Generation & Descendants UK – Glenda Andrew.
