Harris Reopens This September – A New Chapter Begins

After a once-in-a-generation transformation, we’re back. And we can’t wait to welcome you in.

On Sunday, 28 September 2025, The Harris will reopen its doors as a bold, reimagined space for everyone. Where art, culture, history, learning and community come together like never before.

Thanks to an incredible multi-million restoration, made possible by Preston City Council, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the UK Government’s Towns Fund, Lancashire County Council and many other generous partners, The Harris has been lovingly transformed inside and out. But we haven’t just renovated a building – we’ve rethought what it means to be a truly inclusive cultural space in the heart of Preston.

The Harris Your Place project is about so much more than bricks and mortar. It was about people. And you’ve played a big part in shaping what The Harris becomes next.

From community consultations to workshops with local young people, we’ve listened. You’ve told us what matters, what inspires you, and what you need from The Harris. And now, we’re proud to bring those ideas to life, with brand new exhibitions, learning spaces, family-friendly facilities, a welcoming new café and shop, and heritage tours that celebrate the building’s unique story.

Expect a Harris that feels both familiar and fresh. Where the past and future meet in surprising, exciting ways.

A Space for Everyone

When we say everyone is welcome, we mean it.

We’ve made vital improvements to heating, lighting, accessibility, and safety – including the careful removal of asbestos and extensive restoration to protect this historic building for generations to come.

Whether you’re here to explore world-class art, get creative in our learning spaces, enjoy a moment of calm with your family, or simply reconnect with a building full of memories, this is your space.

And we’re ready to grow with you. We’re expecting to welcome over 450,000 visitors each year. That’s 100,000 more than before we closed in 2021!

A New Look – Still The Harris You Know and Love

With our reopening comes a brand new look and feel.

Working with Preston-based agency Bird, we’ve introduced a new visual identity for The Harris. One that reflects who we are now: confident, creative, community-led, and rooted in our city’s rich heritage. You’ll notice a refreshed logo, a redesigned website, and a more modern, accessible style that’s all about welcoming everyone in.

Because The Harris isn’t just a museum, library or gallery. It’s all of those things… and more.
