It’s all in a name

Written by our history intern

My name is Philippa Lazarus and I am a second-year undergraduate at Lancaster University on placement at the Harris. For the last couple of days I have been in the museum’s archive working on cataloguing the copious amount of items that the Harris has acquired over the years.

In particular, there was one item that I was intrigued with, to all intents and purposes they were merely Native American themed playing cards from a Los Angeles department store in 1903. However, the name of the department store was P. Lazarus and co. which rather caught me by surprise. It was astounding to me that even though I was born 300 miles from Preston that I found a deck of playing cards from America that shared my name, it is certainly a small world. Who knows what other treasures lurk in that cavernous archive, I am excited to find out!
