October Half-Term Activities
Enjoy a week of exciting family-friendly science, creativity, and discovery at The Harris this October half-term. From robot workshops and fibre discovery to arts and crafts and live performances, there is something for everyone.
Animals! (a family friendly performance)
Monday, 26 October at 10.30am – 11.30am & 2pm – 3pm | Reading Room
The animals are gathering… But one species hasn’t turned up, and it’s the species which has been causing all the trouble. Something’s got to happen, and whatever it is, it’s going to be wild! Fun, interactive and featuring original songs, Animals! is an empowering and uplifting performance about animals, humans and nature. It celebrates the amazing wildlife around us and makes big things feel possible.

Fibre Discovery Studio
Tuesday, 27 October at 11am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 3pm | The Studio |
A family drop-in exploring the journey from fleece to fibre. Visitors can handle raw fleece, wool and cotton, watch spinning demonstrations using a drop spindle and spinning wheel, have a go at carding, and create their own woven keepsake using either a simple cardboard loom or paper weaving for younger visitors. Suitable for a wide range of ages, with activities lasting from 5 – 30 minutes depending on the participant and activity.

Let’s Get Printing with Phoebe Foxtrot
Wednesday, 28 October at 10am -11am, 1pm – 2pm & 3pm – 4pm | The Studio
Unleash your creativity at The Harris this October half term with local illustrator Phoebe Foxtrot. Inspired by the patterns of Horrockses dresses, in this immersive, hands-on workshop, Phoebe will guide you to create your own custom repeating designs using the textured art of collagraphy, which you can then print onto a cotton bag to take home!

Foucault Pendulum Talks
Wednesday, 28 October at 10am -3pm | Ground Floor Rotunda
Learn about Learn about the history and science behind the UK’s longest Foucault Pendulum, which is situated at The Harris. Students from the University of Lancashire will be holding short talks about the pendulum and will take place on the hour between 10am and 3pm in The Rotunda.

Baby Bounce and Rhyme
Every Wednesday at 10.30am & 2.30pm | Family Library
Sharing songs and rhymes is a fun way for babies and toddlers to develop their language skills.

Ink, Print, Repeat
Thursday, 29 October at 11am – 11.40am, 1pm – 1.40pm & 2pm – 2.40pm | The Studio
Join Print, Paint and Pixel to have a go at making repeat patterns with lino and foam blocks. This is a drop in activity and you can join any time during the session.

Frieze Making Station
Thursday, 29 October at 1pm – 4pm | First Floor Balcony
Join the University of Lancashire’s Maths Team to find out about the beautiful repeating patterns and symmetries that are part of The Harris. Try your hand at recreating the patterns and see what else you can find in the Spot the Frieze trail.

The Anatomy of a Robot – Interactive Show

This interactive talk explains the science behind robotics. Meet different types of robots and find out how biomimicry and AI helps them to do some very clever things.
