Lancashire in 70 objects: The Cuerdale Hoard

In 1840 a vast hoard of Viking silver was found at Cuerdale near Preston. It was buried more than 1,100 years ago! We’re celebrating this remarkable story for Lancashire Life’s 70th anniversary project, A History of Lancashire in 70 Objects.

The Cuerdale Hoard was buried when the Ribble valley was the main route between Viking York and the Irish Sea. The 7,5000 coins and 1,000 bits of silver jewellery were discovered by workmen in 1840.
